Art Assets, Logos, Icons, and Related

I have existing logos or art assets. Are they able to be used on my website?

Yes, existing art assets can be used. In some cases, art assets may need to be altered or touched up due to image resolution or other technical issues. Generally, this can be handled without any additional assistance from your end.

Can logos or other branding material be created for my website?

Yes. Logo, icon, favicon, banner images, and other art assets can be created from scratch, and/or by modifying existing materials. If you have specific concepts or ideas, we are glad to work with you, or are glad to create ideas/proposals from scratch.

Are you able to take photos or videos of my business, project, or other locations in person?

Yes, we are able to visit in person locations to develop art assets. Many standard projects within qualifying areas may include this in the original quote if/when needed. If needed as a stand alone service, arrangements can be made.

What is the timeframe for completion of projects?

Standard websites are completed within 30 days. Hourly work varies, and should be discussed with us directly. Options are available to expedite work as needed; additional costs may apply.

Does 256 Kilobytes outsource projects to third-world countries?

No. I am based in Laramie, WY. All contractors hired are American, or in occasional cases from Europe. If someone besides me would be assisting with your project, you would be informed.

Does 256 Kilobytes use Artificial Intelligence to create websites?

No. I have see the Terminator 2. Also the Terminator 1. Which is all of the Terminator movies that I care to acknowledge.

There is no AI used for any purpose, including image design, content writing, and website creation.

What steps are taken to ensure website security?

Some of the steps taken to ensure that websites are secure include:

  • Ensuring that transferred data is encrypted using SSL
  • Avoiding the use of dependencies, libraries, and tools with known security issues
  • Avoiding the use of dependencies that are likely to be the target of zero-day attacks
  • Avoiding the use of excessive and unnecessary dependencies
  • Use of anti-spam techniques to reduce and prevent spam requests submitted through online forms. Such techniques include in-house algorithms, as well as third-party tools as relevant.
  • Hiding email addresses, phone numbers, and other contact information from spambots
  • Use of WHOIS privacy to hide contact information from spambots
  • Use of rate-limiting as-needed to prevent spam requests, such as DDoS attacks
  • Installation of analytics software as relevant to monitor traffic to websites
  • Use of IP addresses, user-agent, and other data to track and prevent spam, as relevant
  • Encryption of relevant data stored in databases, such as passwords
  • Ensuring regular updates to software, tools, and technologies
  • Sanitization of user inputs (such as form data)

Some of these steps may not apply to all websites. Other steps are taken to ensure security as needed and relevant. If you have specific security concerns about your project, feel free to discuss them with us.

What steps are taken to ensure that websites are maintainable and dependable?

Some of the steps that are taken to ensure that all websites and projects are maintainable and dependable include:

  • Avoiding the use of excessive or unnecessary dependencies
  • Use of suitable technologies for project needs
  • Creation of website backups as needed to ensure content backups are available
  • If/where relevant, inclusion of an administrator dashboard where clients can directly edit content
  • Designing websites to use server resources efficiently (e.g., bandwidth and processor usage) to ensure scalability
  • Website performance optimization as needed and relevant
  • Creation of internal documentation (e.g., code comments) to ensure that projects can be updated and modified easily, by any developer
  • Use of consistent code and design style
  • Optimization of website assets to ensure performance
  • Providing ongoing support and maintenence at fair rates, including discounts for recently completed projects

Other steps are taken as needed and relevant. If you have specific concerns about your project's maintainability, feel free to discuss them with us.

How does 256 Kilobytes ensure that my website loads and runs quickly?

Some of the metrics that are considered when evaluating websites are:

  • Page size and file size
  • Website/server ping time
  • Time to first byte
  • Element render delay
  • Document request latency
  • First contentful paint
  • Largest contentful paint
  • Total blocking time
  • Cumulative layout shift
  • Speed index

However, the most important method is manual testing. Metrics have many limitations, and are used primarily as a way of detecting areas for improvement.

Mobile-Responsive Design

All websites are designed to be functional and usable on mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops of any standard size. Sites are tested at at least the following standard resolutions/breakpoints.

Size Resolution Notes
Average Smartphone Under 600 Pixels -
Large Smartphone 600 Pixels to 767 Pixels Or Vertical Tablet
Horizontal Tablet 768 Pixels to 991 Pixels Or Some Horizontal Phones
Desktop/Laptop 993 Pixels to 1199 Pixels Halfsize Window
Desktop/Laptop 1200 Pixels or More Maximized Window

Domain Registration and Web Hosting

Do I need to know anything about domain registration or hosting?

Not really. 256 Kilobytes will manage your domain registration and web hosting, unless requested otherwise. If you already have a registered domain name, or already have webhosting, or require a specific setup, we are happy to meet your specifications.

What is domain registration?

In order for a web browser to find the location of a website, it must know what IP address is associated with that website's domain name. To do this, websites must register their domain names. For more information on the technical details of domain registration, you can reference this article by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

There is a nominal yearly fee for registering a domain name, which is charged annually, or in increments of multiple years (up to ten years at a time). For standard projects, 256 Kilobytes includes three years of domain registration in the cost of the project. At such time that your domain name is nearing its expiration date, you will be informed by 256 Kilobytes so that we can renew your domain.

What should I choose for my domain name?

While any domain name will work, some considerations to take into account when choosing a domain name are:

  • Domain names should be memorable. For example, nike.com is more brandable and memorable than buyshoes.com. There may be some exceptions to this for certain specialized projects, but frankly that hasn't really been a thing since like 2009.
  • Domain names should be easy to spell.
  • Domain names should be unlikely to cause confusion (both legally and in search engines). For example, if registering mywebsite.com, it may be confusing (or legally problematic) if there is already a site at mywebsite.org. It may also be difficult to gain visibility in search engines if there is a similarly named company.
  • When chosing a top-level TLD (like .com, .org, .tv, etcetera), consider what jurisdiction manages that TLD. E.g., a .co.uk TLD is subject to British laws. A .tv is subject to the laws of Tuvalu. Ensure that there are no legal issues related to your site or its content.

We are happy to provide advice and suggestions regarding domain name selection.

What is web hosting?

For a user to view a website, it must be sent to their computer from a server. A server is simply another computer. Generally, it is a computer designed specifically for this purpose, but it can technically be any computer. However, the average home computer or laptop is not designed for this purpose, and would experience various problems serving websites. Instead, websites generally store their files on a server that is located in a facility that is specifically designed to store and serve websites.

There are nominal costs for renting server space. For most websites, this cost ranges from ten to twenty USD per month. 256 Kilobytes covers the first year of web hosting for most new projects, and may cover additional web hosting costs for some arrangements.

What type of server will 256 Kilobytes serve my website from?

By default, your website will be served from a shared server. This server is managed by 256 Kilobytes. For most small to medium websites, shared server hosting provides plenty of resources and flexibility with minimal overhead costs.

If you would prefer to host your website from a virtual private server (VPS) or a dedicated private server, this can be arranged by request. There are additional recurring costs to such arrangements. Typically, this will not provide performance or other improvements to your website, although some high-traffic or high-complexity projects may require such a setup. We are happy to consult with you about whether a VPS or dedicated server would be beneficial or necessary for your project.
