You have a blog. You don't have time. You need SEO that's fast but functional. Here are five tips for you.

There are many principles of effective SEO. But the techniques vary as you get more and more specific. Today, let’s focus on SEO tips that are:

  • For blogs,
  • Quick to implement,
  • Onsite (and not offsite), and
  • Preferably for the non-technical person.

So, here are a total of five quick blog optimization tips for onsite SEO. But before that, we need to learn what onsite is and what offsite is because knowing onsite SEO will help you in executing these techniques.

What is onsite SEO?

Onsite SEO is that part of SEO that’s under your direct control. In a nutshell, onsite SEO is the stuff you can do to your website pages to increase your traffic and click-through rate (CTR).

In comparison to offsite SEO, onsite is totally about what decisions you take. For example, changing the titles of your blog posts is up to you. Getting linked by another website is, however, up to the other website (offsite).

1. Content is king

This is the biggest SEO strategy ever. Your content has to be high quality, which means it has to be:

  • Original – not plagiarized.
  • Deep, meaningful, and thought-provoking – not thin, spun, and boring.
  • Written with authority – not uncertainty.
  • Easy to read and share.
  • Clear and to-the-point – not overly complex, literary, academic, or a novel.
  • Long – unless it’s a news update. Longer than 400 words is a minimum I implore you to cast in iron.
  • Linked to other pages on the internet.
  • Visual -- meaning it should have images, videos, infographics, charts, whatever is relevant.

2. Make sure your website structure is bot-friendly

A bot-friendly website is quite easy to create, but we mostly do it wrong. Remember, crawling bots (Google’s spiders or Bing’s search bots) don’t see a website the way a human does. They rely on alt texts, descriptions, HTML tags, etc. to figure out the content.

So as much as writing quality content is necessary to rank higher in search results; making a bot-friendly website is that much necessary to get indexed properly.

One of the biggest onsite SEO trends is to get your HTML right:

  • Title tags in images and links should be present and relevant.
  • Alt text should be appended in image tags.
  • HTML5 tags should be utilized to future-proof your website for coming Google search algorithm updates.

3. Intelligent subheadings

Subheadings are the headings for many sections your post or article will have. It is highly recommended to author content that has many sections, properly distinguished by different subheadings (like this article has 6 sections and thus 6 subheadings).

Be sure to add your keywords and phrases you want to rank for inside these subheadings. Always keep your subheadings in h1 or h2 tags so that bots know it's a heading.

4. Articles titles and URLs must have keywords

The title (or heading) of your article and the URL of your article – both must have one of your primary keywords in them.

If your article is about post-World War II gun sales, make sure your article heading and URL mentions World War II and/or gun sales. Push your primary keyword further ahead.

It’s not an academic journal, it’s a blog:

  • “The Sale of Guns: An Analysis of the Impact of World War II” is a terrible heading for the web.
  • “Post-World War II Gun Sales Analysis” is much better.

Try to write magnetic headings. Omit the use of semi-colons and articles (the, a, an) as much as possible – especially at the beginning of your heading.

The further ahead a word comes in your title, the more weight it gets. You’d want to put more weight on your keywords for better SEO.

5. Customized snippets

Customized snippets are an advanced thing. But using certain plugins or tools for your blogging platform, you can customize what text appears below your URL in search engine ranking pages.

If you know your target keywords and audience precisely, customize your snippets and override search engine defaults for better traffic. Learn more about it before experimenting. Yoast is a good option to get started.

Some design is good, some design is bad, and yet some design is just full retard Comic Sans with a rainbow gradient on it.
