Yes...ad servers can be very confusing, especially since there are advertiser-side (buyer) and publisher-side (seller) ones. Which one are you? Regardless, here are articles I've found to be the best on both:

Good luck in your research!

So I had to use an ad server on a blog I had last year and went with Google's DFP. I would recommend just using that. It's free unless you have like 50 million+ impressions a month. This article has an overview of DFP - https://martech.zone/what-is-an-ad-server/

Here are also some good overviews of the ad server term. The Clearcode one in the other post is also very good.

And here are some lists of other top ad servers, in case you don't like DFP:

An ad server is a piece of advertising technology (AdTech) that is used by publishers, advertisers, ad agencies, and ad networks to manage and run online advertising campaigns. Ad servers are responsible for making instantaneous decisions about what ads to show on a website, then serving them. On top of that, an ad server collects and reports data (such as impressions, clicks, etc.)for advertisers to gain insights from and monitor the performance of their ads.

On the most basic level, an ad server is to ads what WordPress is to content. In the same way, WordPress is used to manage a website’s content, and servers are used to manage and display online advertising content to the right user on a website.
