Despite not having an unreasonable amount of games on my Xbox, I find myself constantly having to uninstall games to make room for new ones I want to try. /

They take so long to download that it becomes a real nuisance when I want to play an old game of mine on a whim, but have to wait an hour+ for it to download. Not to mention that this requires choosing another game (or multiple) to uninstall in the meantime.

Is there such a thing as a memory card or expansion for Xbox One?

You can format essentially any external hard drive (such as a Seagate) to act as external storage for your Xbox One. There are ones specifically branded toward the Xbox One, but aren't better in any way than generic hard drives,

One limit is that the drive must have at least 256GB and no larger than 16TB. I would recommend a 1 or 2 TB drive for an average gamer. Those aren't excessive, but large enough that you probably won't have to go through this again in the near future. The drive must also be USB 3.0 compatible, as 2.0 doesn't allow for a fast enough transfer rate to be used my Xbox. The Xbox One can support up to two external hard drives, so you can always add another one later if you find you need more storage.

When you have your drive, simply plug it into the Xbox One's USB port and the option to format the device will pop-up. From here, you can navigate the on-screen instructions.

Please also be aware that formatting a drive for Xbox will automatically overwrite any data already on the drive, so don't use a drive that you have already used to, say, back up your computer. You also won't be able to store other things on it once it has been specifically formatted for Xbox, so make sure you have a dedicated Xbox drive before beginning.

  • Assuming you’re using a 2.5-inch HDD and an external enclosure, open the enclosure to expose the SATA port. Align your hard drive’s SATA connectors with the port, firmly pushing it in until snugly in place.
  • Close your enclosure door (or replace the cover), then connect a USB 3.0 cable to the enclosure. Set the external hard drive to the side.
  • Power on your Xbox One X. Once you’re at the home screen, plug in your external drive. The enclosure lights should come on (and you should hear the drive disk spinning).
  • At this point, the Xbox interface will display a pop-up if the drive isn’t formatted. Using your Xbox controller, navigate to the “Format storage device” option and press the “A” button to select. On the next screen, you also have the option of naming the storage device.
  • Follow the setup wizard’s instructions by confirming you’d like to format the drive in question. At this point, the Xbox interface will present you with the option to install future games and apps on the external hard drive, rather than on the console’s internal storage.
  • Select “Install new things here” on the check box to confirm. Now you should be ready to download and install more games on your Xbox One X console.
