I bought a used external hard drive and need it for a special project. But whenever I try to save data to it, it tells me the memory is full. How do I wipe everything off the external hard drive?

If you are on Windows: It is going to be the same process as formatting a flash drive. When the external hard drive is plugged in, just right-click on its icon from the Windows Explorer and click on Format. Adjust the settings as per your desire or need and then click on Format.

If you are on Mac, you will need to use the Disk Utility app. Search for it from the Applications folder. Now, select the external hard drive in question and check the right-hand side. There will be a number of tabs, the second one of them being Erase. Go to Erase and choose the settings here like the name. Now, click on Erase...

Needless to say, third-party formatting tools come with additional features and more advanced support for erasing all data. They might also be faster. If you don't like the native option or if they don't work for you, you can download a format or wipe software that will surely get the job done for you with your satisfaction.

Some design is good, some design is bad, and yet some design is just full retard Comic Sans with a rainbow gradient on it.

To initialize external disk in Windows and Mac or other operating system are different. Formatting hard drive can not only empty the data in the hard drive, but also change the file system, such as NTFS, exFAT and EXT2/3/4. If you have important data in the disk, please make a backup to save the data. Because disk initialization will erase all data from disk which may not be able to recover. The guidance here introduces how to format external disk in PC with different operating system. Hope it can help you find a solution.
