Too much thermal paste cannot damage your machine.

To fully understand this, you have to understand what thermal paste really is. Basically, to mitigate CPU heat, a heat sink is used. Oftentimes, the heat sink (the material that takes the heat and throws it out) or the CPU's heat plate (the material that produces the heat that has to be taken care of to avoid overheating) is not perfectly flat or aligned. The thermal compound or paste fills the gaps (often microscopic) so that there's a better heat transfer between the heat plate of the CPU and the heat sink.

In an ideal situation, the heat sink is perfectly aligned and takes up the entire CPU plate. In this case, you need no thermal paste. But that's not the case in most of the machines. So, covering the entire CPU plate is fine, but covering it with too much can be counterintuitive as the heat sink will actually receive less heat from the CPU plate.

You want thermal paste in an amount that fills in all the gaps between the CPU's heat plate and the heat sink, that's all. But as I said in the very beginning, too much thermal paste cannot harm your CPU or machine in any way whatsoever.
