I've been reading a lot of content about SEO and something called EAT is coming a up  alot. I'm wondering a couple of things and have some questions.

  • What is EAT?
  • What does EAT stand for?
  • Where did it come from?
  • How do we measure it?
  • How do I improve my EAT score?

Thanks!

Sooooooo much stuff man...

    > What is EAT?

EAT stands for Experise, Authority, Trust. It's a list of buzz words that allow Google to work out how much it can trust a particular website.

    > What does EAT stand for?

See above homie.

    > Where did it come from?

Google put together a document for the "search quality raters", which is a 160 something page document used internally.

The search quality team are a team of 100's of real life people, their job is to view websites and answer questions like:

  • Would you say this website is useful?
  • What is this website about?
  • Would you enter your credit card into this website?

The whole idea is to allow Google to measure the quality of their search results, as well as identify useful patterns and things that users expect to be on a website for a certain type of query (for example, product searches should land you on ecommerce websites).

You can read their document in full here:

    > How do we measure it?

I don't doubt that some idiot is building tools to measure this, but currently there is no way to really score EAT and it's unknown how Google (even if they do) use EAT to influence search results.

    > How do I improve my EAT score?

High EAT seems to go hand in hand with having a solid brand, so just worry about that instead of silly shit like this.

In general, it seems like these simple things will help:

  • Use author markup and build solid social profiles
  • Encourage users to leave you reviews on platform like Google My Business, Trustpilot and Yelp
  • Audit your content quality, make sure you're seen as a resource
  • Make sure you are using SSL certificates and display any certifications or accreditations your business has

EAT is abbreviated as Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. EAT determines a website's value which means how trustable is your website.
