I want to make a favicon for my website. Can anyone tell me what the optimal and required dimensions are for one?

16x16 pixels is the standard for the web. Save it as a .ico file and you're done. 32x32 also works and preserves more details.

The more important thing to keep in mind is that the favicon doesn't lose information or clarity when it's 16x16 because that's a very small size. So, design a favicon that's simple and works on 16x16. Test multiple variations and colors, both on black background and white, as some Chrome and Firefox themes paint the tab bar black.

Some design is good, some design is bad, and yet some design is just full retard Comic Sans with a rainbow gradient on it.
