I'm learning about databases and I had a question about GROUP BY. When I use it does it remove the duplicates?

The GROUP BY is only used for aggregation. It groups contents by arguments. To combine the duplicate rows, I'd suggest using the SELECT DISTINCT command.

Some design is good, some design is bad, and yet some design is just full retard Comic Sans with a rainbow gradient on it.

GROUP BY allows the only aggregation. If you want to remove all duplicated rows, use SELECT DISTINCT.

But DISTINCT command also so slow for large datasets. If you're using MSSQL Server, it will be slower than MySQL.

Another way to remove duplicates WHERE EXISTS statement.
