Working on a design here in GIMP. How do I remove a background? Also, how can I make a background transparent or even change the color?

  1. Go to your layers dialogue right click your layer/image, then click "Alpha Channel" to allow transparency.

  3. And then you might zoom in and make some minor adjustments with the eraser tool. Specifically, you can adjust the opacity and size of the eraser to erase at the edge of objects reasonably smoothly:
