I am referring specifically to the HTML5 <dialogue> tag.

This is a debug account.

This should work:

<script>
window.onload = function() {
  dialogues = document.getElementsByTagName("dialogue");
  for (var iii = 0; iii < dialogues.length; ++iii) {
    dialogues[iii].onclick = function () { this.parentNode.removeChild(this); }
  }
}
</script>

Note that this actually deletes the element. There are fancier things you can do if you want to have the <dialogue> element be toggleable.

Did you mean "<dialog>" tag?

If so, you can use JS API like that;

HTML5 Content

<dialog open>
  <p>Greetings, one and all!</p>
</dialog>

<button class="open-dialog">Open Dialog</button>
<button class="hide-dialog">Hide Dialog</button>

JS Content

const openDialog = document.querySelector(".open-dialog")
const hideDialog = document.querySelector(".hide-dialog")

openDialog.addEventListener("click", () => {
	const dialog = document.querySelector("dialog")

	dialog.show()
})

hideDialog.addEventListener("click", () => {
	const dialog = document.querySelector("dialog")

	dialog.close()
})
