Hi,
I am Alvion a junior marketer that wants to specialize in SEO. I am looking for a tool that could spy on the links created by my competitor. I need to have a record of when the link is built and when the link is dropped. Ahrefs and Sem rush doesn't have that and its fairly inaccurate for link building. Does anyone of you have any recommendations? Any help given is deeply appreciated.
Cheers
Alvion

Ahrefs has a "First seen/Last check" column for when links are built and there's a separate tab to monitor lost backlinks (see screenshot below). SEMRush has a similar feature.

Ahrefs - Lost Backlinks Tab

Is there something more specific that is needed for your use case?

I am facing this problem in Ahrefs, the links that they last checked are links that are outdated and with google update, my data is showing me that competitors with a lesser link on their page actually have better ranking in SERP. I am suspecting, only high trust websites work these days, like the really authoritative ones... other than that I don't think it is useful.

The problem with Ahrefs is it doesn't have the total and "live" count of links. If you build links Ahrefs has to find them to show you the links (obviously).

Your competitors could also be using blog networks which block the Ahrefs bot which will never show in Ahrefs. However, unless you're in a very spammy niche I doubt this is the case. It's entirely possible to rank with less links than your competitors, SERPs are not just sorted by link count. There are 100's of other factors that go into it.

Some of those things might include:

Domain Authority

If you're trying to compete with national brands and you have a blog for cheap rope, you're going to have to work really hard... These sites have built trust with Google and get rewarded for it. They are typically big brands and will rank well even if the page isn't optimised that well.

Quality of Links

If you have less but better links (better is more relvant, more authorative, in content links vs blog comments) you can win, this is something you brought up and could be whats happening.

You should also look at internal links, these can work well to push pagerank around your website to the important parts that you want to rank.

On Page SEO

If your page sucks then you're not going to get great results. Search engines want to rank the best content at the top, help make it easier for them and they will reward you with traffic.

Look at what is currently ranking and look at your page, what does it have that is missing for you? What do you have that they don't? Do you actually have the best resource/information/page for that keyword?

If not you should go and fix this. You should also be building your page in a search engine friendly way, read/watch this:

You also have to look at the website as a whole, do you have any issues elsewhere? Common problems that crop up are:

  • orphan pages
  • 404 errors
  • thin/duplicate content
  • broken images
  • missing/duplicate meta data
  • unsemantic HTML (multiple h1 tags, misuse of various other tags)
  • fluff code (typical with bought themes, makes crawling hard for bots)

It's also worth adding your website to Google search console, if there are any major errors it will often alert you.

Page Speed and Mobile Friendlyness

I'm bunching these together because they kind of tie into each other now. Google has a "mobile first" index, this was rolled out last year. This means when they crawl new content they make sure it works on a range of devices from desktops to mobile phones.

If your website is a horrible experience on a mobile phone, you're going to suffer and a huge part of mobile is how fast does the website load on shitty connections like 3G/4G or brain melting 5G.

Heres a good guide to minimising page speed, which you should be doing anyway.

Lack of Proper Links

Are the links you have actually good? The general rule I stick to is research the competitor I want to beat, pull all their links (including intermal links) and beat them by at least 50%.

If you sort their links into various categories it starts to make sense and becomes more logical. If they have 20 web 2.0's, 50 blog comments, 5 high authority blogs that link to them I will focus on beating them in those specific ratios at 50% higher quantity. This in my opinion is non-autistic and helps you fly under the radar. Just buying GSA blasts is autistic.

Some good sources for links are covered here:

You may also have good links but with shitty anchor text, over or under optimised anchor text can make a difference. Try and copy what your competitor did again.

SEO is not that hard when you start to look at things logically, Google literally give you the best result they have for every keyword. It's a case of looking at it, recreating it to a higher standard and making it available to Google for next time someone searches for that particular keyword.

If you don't know why they are outranking you look again, the answer will be hidden but it's probably links.

There's also the question of how to definte what a better/lesser link is. Is that according to third party metrics? According to how nice the page looks? According to how topical the linked pages are?
