Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a widely-used practice employed to scale traffic by optimizing your webpages to appear higher up on search engine result pages (SERPs), which is mostly just Google’s pages (80%+ traffic on desktop search engines is Google, read this for a better breakdown: SEO on Google vs. Bing vs. Yahoo!). Most of the traffic that goes into a website comes from search engines and that is why a search engine optimization is a necessary tool.

As you might know already, there are tons of benefits of SEO. It builds your brand value and website authority, it boosts your passive income, and more.

Content

Focus on the content.

  • For effective SEO, aim towards great content. All the rest will come together itself.

  • Be original, insightful, engaging, unique, and write long pieces. If you’re just remodeling already existing content or worse yet, plagiarizing – forget any SEO strategy can work for you in long term.

  • Don’t do keyword stuffing. Keywords shall be present at least in the first and last paragraphs. Add LSI keywords and main keywords throughout the post but don’t make it too obvious or forced.

  • Keyword of a page shall be present in its URL and main headline as well.

Links

Not just links, build good relationships. Link building is a great art in itself.

  • Natural link building is slow. Be active on social media and link to others and the process will be fastened.

  • As your website’s age increases, it’ll start attracting good backlinks.

  • Remove backlinks from spammy sources. It can penalize your website.

  • Reach out to industry leaders and authority websites in your niche. Ask them to help you with spreading the word around. More authoritative websites linking to you means more authority your website gets in SEO terms.

Social

Be social.

  • Your content shall be shareable. Easily shareable.

  • Sharing of your URL on social media isn’t as effective as links on other, related websites. But it’s important for another reason. The more social bookmarking and social chatter you have, the more promising and engaging your content is for search engines.

  • Be happy to link to other websites and external sources. It helps your user complete their information cycle. It’s also taken into consideration by Google. Google rewards a website that outlinks in plenty because it sees it as a social factor. One of the primary factors that decide your result's position for your target keyword on Google's SERPs is, in fact, external linking.

Clarity

Present your brand promise, idea, products, selling point, call to action, or message as clearly and quickly as possible.

  • Don’t make visitors wait.

  • Don’t make them confused before they figure out the meaty content.

Process data

Analyze, learn, experiment, repeat.

  • Learn from your mistakes.

  • Build on top performing pages.

  • See why are top performing pages and items there.

  • Process your analysis data from Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools to set goals, track growth, and devise fresh new plans to have even more effective SEO.

Multimedia

In this age, content isn’t just text.

  • Utilize all forms of content: text, video, images, podcasts/audio, downloadables, web apps, HTML5 elements, etc. as suited. Google cannot understand and index Flash sites, but Bing and Yahoo! will happily do so and will also reward your website if it's a Flash website or uses Flash content (and other multimedia content).

  • Animated explainer videos work like a charm. If you need to explain something, think of getting a quickly animated explainer made rather than typing 500 words for it. On Fiverr, you can get them for $5.

  • Infographics have immense power. There must be something you can research related to your website’s niche. Do it. Make tasty infographics and make them easily shareable.

Technical

  • Swiftness is important for effective SEO. Minimize code, use CDN if necessary, use only JPGs if possible, load scripts in the footer, use cache services, etc., to increase page load speed. Test it.

  • Make sure your website is responsive and fully mobile friendly. Test it.

  • HTTPs certificate is important for e-commerce websites to rank higher.

  • Have an engaging, modern design and look. Boring websites make visitors bounce. Headings shall be big and bold, the website shall not look outdated, don’t use dead colors as backgrounds. If it doesn’t look good to the eyes, it isn’t any good.

  • Have a proper visual hierarchy to your website. Make it easy to navigate from one page to another. Have multiple lists and menus around main content to make more content discoverable, besides only one navigation top-bar.

  • Digital marketing is necessary. Invest small – social media has a lot of options for paid advertisement and sponsored content, like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc. Once you sustain yourself with ads, go for AdWords.

  • Utilize tags, <h1> for heading, <h2> for subheads, etc.

Some design is good, some design is bad, and yet some design is just full retard Comic Sans with a rainbow gradient on it.

>use only JPGs if possible

No don't do this, use .jpg for photos and highly detailed images. Use .png and .gif for everything with solid blocks of colour.

More here:

Also Googles page speed tool is bad.
